ACCEPTABLE USE AND INTERNET SAFETY POLICY
Diamond Charter School (DCS) provides computer resources for students to use as educational tools for research, schoolwork, and communication. This policy is intended to promote responsible digital citizenship and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world. Grounded by one of our school’s four C’s, citizenship, students will use technology in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical.
Students of DCS and their parents/guardians agree that the student will abide by the following 7 Principles of Responsible Digital Citizenship:
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY COMPUTER ACCOUNTS. I understand that passwords are private and that I should not share my passwords with anyone. I am responsible for all activities done through my account. I will not allow others to use my account name and password, or try to use those of others. I will log off the computer at the end of every session so another user cannot use my password.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY USE OF THE SCHOOL NETWORK. I will use school computer resources for educational purposes only. I will use appropriate language in all my digital communications. I will not use profanity, vulgarity or any other unacceptable language, as determined by school administrators. I will not search, retrieve, save, circulate or display hate-based, offensive, violent, or sexually explicit material. I understand that the use of the DCS network for illegal or commercial activities is prohibited.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. I understand that it is unsafe to post any personal information about myself or others (including but not limited to names, addresses, and phone numbers). I will not post photos of students with their first and last names on any site.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW I TREAT OTHER PEOPLE. I will be respectful in all my digital interactions. I will not send or post hateful words, make discriminatory or derogatory remarks about others, or engage in bullying, harassment, or other antisocial behaviors while in school or out of school. I understand that impersonating someone is forbidden. I will be mindful of how my actions online impact my reputation, the reputation of others, and the reputation of the school.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLE’S PROPERTY. I will obey copyright laws. I will not plagiarize or use another person’s work without proper citation and permission. I will not illegally download materials protected by copyright, including but not limited to music and movies.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTING SCHOOL PROPERTY. I understand that vandalism is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to modifying or destroying equipment, programs, files, or settings on any computer or technology resources. I am not allowed to download and/or install any programs or files on school devices. I understand that I need authorization from a school administrator/teacher to use personal electronic devices that I bring to school.
- I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTING THE SECURITY OF THE NETWORK. I will not attempt to bypass security settings or Internet filters, or interfere with the operation of the network by installing illegal software including file sharing, shareware, or freeware on school computers.
ACCEPTANCE
- When using technology resources, I agree to always act in a manner that is respectful to myself and others, in a way that will represent the school in a positive way.
- I accept that this policy applies in school and outside school.
- I agree to report any violations of the items listed above to a school administrator or teacher.
- I understand that failing to follow this policy will lead to appropriate disciplinary actions and/or loss of the privilege of using school technology and internet resources.
